Land of Odds offering beginner’s course
The Orientation to Beads and Jewelry Findings is being offered online at the Land of Odds This course was developed by instructor Warren Feld because he noticed that beginner beaders didn’t always make the best choices when it came to quality. Personally, I learned the hard way a long time ago that if I was going to put 40 hours or more into a bead embroidered necklace, I wasn’t going to skimp on the cabochons, beads, and metal findings! Warren writes: Over the years, I’ve found that people who bead and make jewelry have not necessarily learned how to make the best choices, when it comes to decide what beads, clasps, other findings, and stringing materials to include, and what Not to include, in a piece. People do not understand quality issues. They are often uninformed about workable materials and strategies to make their pieces more durable, more drape-able, and better able to move with the person as the jewelry is worn.

Quick Project Thursday #15
Each Thursday I share a quick project that has what I think to be a good return on your time. This week I am showing you vintage French embroidered ribbon made into beautiful bookmarks. I have never been one to “dog ear” a page in a magazine or book, wanting to keep it like new, and although I generally use anything I can find to mark my spot, these are a much more beautiful way to accomplish that….. And isn’t it the small things done right in life that make it wonderful . To create your own bookmarks, use any beautiful ribbon of your choice, jewelry findings, and quick ribbon end clips (I buy my at Joanns in the jewelry department) Simply cut the ribbon to the desired length. Fold over each end approximately 1/4″ and iron flat. Clip a ribbon fastener to each end and secure with pliers. Embellish the bottom end with jewelry findings, beads, and charms. Tie a sweet 1/2″ silk ribbon to the top fastener. AND, you’re done. These were all made for the upcoming Trade Days on May 15th.

An Old Love Renewed……
This is a room box that I made as a gift for my mother-in-law about thirty years ago. When she passed away, my father-in-law gave it back to me and I’ve had it hanging in my craft room ever since. It’s a little perfume shop. I made the little coat rack, and everything in the room. All the little bottles are made from beads and jewelry findings. I made the shelving and the little bench. The umbrella stand is a little plastic tube of some sort. I painted the inside with gold paint and the umbrellas are cocktail picks with some plastic wrapped around them and then I added some small gold chain to the handle. The carpeting is red cotton velvet and I think it looks just right. So, this is the old love renewed. I’ve always loved miniatures and now that I have time, I can pursue this hobby again. I also have a dollhouse that I started building back then, but life sort of got in the way and it ended up in the garage for many, many years.

Angel Friend Charm Bracelet
After I put it together and modeled it for my hubby, he said it needed more color. So I added the second strand of amber colored beads, making the chain a bit longer so the beads would fall at a pleasing length between the blues and greens. When I showed it to my hubby the second time, he said, “It’s too much” – not even remembering what he had said earlier. But that’s okay. I think he was right the first time. Lol.
